Trump's Team Is Divided On What To Do About Iran

It's up to the President of the United States to decide what the best option is.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has different opinions on how to proceed with the situation with Iran. They are invested in both diplomatic measures and an "aggressive approach".

This is reported by CNN.

Some administration officials have said they want to see how talks between Donald Trump and Chinese leader Si Jinping go. But as CNN notes, the White House chief returned to the U.S. from Beijing on Friday, and there appears to be no news of his success on the Iran issue.

In particular, Trump spoke to reporters and said Xi Jinping expressed a desire to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and agreed that Iran should not develop nuclear weapons. But the problem is that China has made these statements before.

The U.S. president will now have to decide whether launching new strikes on Iran is the best option for ending the conflict, which has dragged on much longer than the originally projected six weeks. That, in turn, has led to a sharp rise in gasoline prices and a drop in the president's approval rating.

Sources said there are differing opinions within the administration about the way forward. Some, including Pentagon officials, favor a more aggressive approach, including targeted strikes that they hope will put additional pressure on Iran to compromise.

Others, however, favor maintaining a focus on diplomacy. Trump himself has leaned toward that approach in recent weeks, too. He had hoped that a combination of direct negotiations and economic pressure would persuade Iran to make a deal. But Tehran hasn't changed its deal terms much since Trump announced the cease-fire in April.
