The US president said there was an "excellent chance" of a peace deal.

The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be extended for three weeks after "very good" talks between the two countries' ambassadors in Washington, US President Donald Trump said.

"I look forward to hosting Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the near future," Trump wrote on his social media Truth Social .

While speaking to reporters at the White House, he added that there is a "great chance" of peace between Israel and Lebanon. At the same time, he said, both sides "need to think about Hezbollah," a Lebanese group that does not report to the government. Trump warned that Hezbollah would disrupt the truce and Israel would "have to defend itself." At the same time, the White House chief pledged to help Lebanon fight the militants. The head of the State Department Marco Rubio against this background noted that Israel and Lebanon "are victims of the same terrorist organization." Following Trump's announced truce extension, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported intercepting Hezbollah rockets that were fired at Israeli forces.

The sides had previously agreed on a ten-day ceasefire that began on April 17. It was preceded by the first direct talks between Israel and Lebanon in 34 years.
