This was stated by an American professor at the Clinton Institute.
The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Kyryl Budanov is playing a subtle diplomatic game, demonstrating the level of one of the most intelligent politicians of our time.
This is the opinion expressed by Scott Lucas, professor of international politics at the University of Birmingham and an expert at the Clinton Institute, in an interview with Daniel Tchie, commenting on Budanov's statements about the progress of the negotiation process and the likelihood of settling the war.
In particular, according to the professor, Budanov's recent statements about the dynamics of the negotiations are first and foremost a well-considered signal to Washington, designed to form the right perception of Ukraine among American elites. Professor Lucas noted his deep respect for General Budanov, calling him a smart politician and a capable political strategist.
- I have great respect for General Budanov. And he is one of the smartest politicians I have seen," the expert emphasized.
In his opinion, understanding the specifics of US domestic politics, the head of the OP sends exactly those messages that are able to satisfy the American partners' demand for constructive and result.
"I think that Budanov gives signals, especially to the US: 'Continue to support us. We want a settlement. We think it's possible to reach that agreement,'" the American professor said.
Defending the OP head's rhetoric, he also suggested that Budanov's diplomatic signals are also a call for the U.S. to strengthen Ukraine, because any weakness only alienates the peace.
-You're not going to reach an agreement with the Russians by giving in to their demands, which is what some people in the Trump administration want. You will not reach a settlement by leaving Ukraine weak economically, militarily or politically. You will reach it (peace agreement - ed.) by leaving Ukraine strong," Scott Lucas summarized, explaining the sober calculation behind Kirill Budanov's diplomatic rhetoric.
