Russia can't win a war.
Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN Andriy Melnyk ironically addressed the representative of the Russian delegation Vasily Nebenzya using a well-known saying.
This was reported by "RBC-Ukraine" with reference to Melnyk's speech at the UN Security Council meeting.
Melnyk's speech at the UN
At the beginning of his speech, the Ukrainian diplomat urged his American partners to strengthen sanctions against Russian energy exports.
He noted that the recent easing of Russian oil sales could bring Russia about $10 billion in April alone.
"Does anyone believe that these super profits will go to fund schools, hospitals or sanitation? They will fund Russia's war of annihilation against Ukraine," Melnyk said.
He said these funds are enough to produce up to half a million deadly "shaheds."
The diplomat also called on the US to take a tougher stance against Russia and on EU countries to eliminate Russia's "shadow fleet" that helps circumvent sanctions. He stressed that "this loophole should be closed forever" and called on the states of the Global South to join the restrictions.
Melnyk suggested that European allies increase military aid to Ukraine to the level of 1% of GDP.
"This will be a powerful signal to Moscow that Mr. Putin has already lost this war," he said.
In addition, the diplomat said that the negotiation process has been effectively blocked by Russia for almost two months, so the UN Security Council should move to concrete actions. In particular, he called on European members to initiate a new resolution with real mechanisms to force a cessation of hostilities, including targeted sanctions.
According to Melnyk, if Russia really wanted peace, it would not block decisions on an immediate ceasefire and exchange of prisoners under the "all-for-all" formula. He emphasized that the new document should be an effective instrument, not a formality.
An address to the Russian delegation
The Ukrainian diplomat expressed confidence that Russia cannot win the war, and even high oil prices will not save its leadership.
Addressing Nebenza directly, he switched to Russian and used a well-known saying:
"It's too late, Vasya, to drink borjom," Melnyk said, adding in English: "When your kidneys have already failed."
