The number of crimes registered by the German police last year, in general, decreased, but there was an increase in murders and a number of other particularly serious crimes. This is stated in the statistics released on Monday, April 20, by the German Interior Ministry and the Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt, BKA). It is based on data from all 16 federal states, reports DW.
According to this data, 5,508,559 crimes were recorded in the FRG in 2025 - 5.6 percent less than a year earlier. Violent crime also fell for the first time since 2021, down 2.3% year-on-year. Meanwhile, a number of serious criminal articles showed a significant increase compared to 2024.
The number of crimes related to new psychoactive substances increased by 25.5%, child pornography - by 19.9%. Cases of rape and serious sexualized crimes increased by 8.5%, and murders increased by 6.5%. The number of cases of computer fraud and burglary has also increased.
The head of the Interior Ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany on the decline in crime: This is "not a reason for relief"
"The decline in violent crime is only the beginning, but not a reason for relief," warned the Minister of the Interior of the Federal Republic of Germany Alexander Dobrindt, presenting the statistics. More measures are needed to "make people feel safe in their daily lives," he said. However, the data may indicate a chance to "achieve a reduction in crime in the long term," Dobrindt noted.
The head of the BKA Holger Münch, for his part, pointed to the changing nature of crime. Crime is "becoming more digital, more international, and in some areas more violent," he said.
Experts attribute the drop in overall crime rates to the partial legalization of cannabis in Germany in April 2024. The number of drug offenses fell by 27.7%, which had a noticeable impact on the overall statistics. Meanwhile, the detection rate remained almost unchanged at 57.9% compared to 58% in 2024.
