Reuters: Europeans Fear The US May Make A "superficial" Deal With Iran

"Inexperienced" U.S. negotiating team is pushing for a quick framework agreement with Iran.

European countries fear that the US may make a "superficial" deal with Iran that will not lead to a solution to the underlying problems. This was reported by Reuters on Sunday, April 19, citing diplomats who have previously negotiated with Tehran.

The interlocutors said the Europeans are concerned that an "inexperienced" U.S. negotiating team is pushing for a quick framework agreement with Iran on its nuclear program and lifting sanctions, and then will engage in technically difficult negotiations.

"The problem is not that there will be no agreement. The problem is that there will be a bad preliminary agreement that will cause endless further problems," a senior European diplomat said.

The White House, meanwhile, rejected the criticism and said U.S. President Donald Trump would only agree to an agreement that "puts America first."

"President Trump has a proven track record of making good deals on behalf of the United States and the American people, and he will only agree to a deal that puts America first," the diplomat noted As one European diplomat noted, "Americans think you agree to three or four points in a five-page document and that's the end of it, but on the nuclear issue, each article opens the door to a dozen more disputes."

"It (negotiations with Iran - ed.) took 12 years and a huge amount of technical work. Does anyone seriously think it can be done in 21 hours?" - said diplomat Federica Mogherini, who coordinated the talks from 2013 to 2015.
