But there are conditions.
Germany has said it is ready to send its minesweepers to the Strait of Hormuz for demining, but only under strict conditions.
This is reported by Politico.
The publication writes that the issue is scheduled to be discussed on Friday, April 17, in Paris, where German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.
A spokesman for the German government said that the federal government is "ready to contribute to freedom of navigation." This could include "demining or maritime reconnaissance," he said.
Merz said Germany is "in principle ready" to help secure the sea lanes, but only under strict conditions.
These include a stable ceasefire, a mandate within the framework of a collective security system - "preferably from the UN" - and formal approval by both the federal government and the Bundestag. Merz emphasized that Berlin remains "far away" from such a solution.
