Either war or de-escalation could occur within a matter of days.
U.S. President Donald Trump met with top national security advisers on November 5 for the first time since the congressional elections, met with his top national security advisers to discuss further plans regarding the situation with Iran. There are three possible scenarios.
This was reported by Axios.
According to sources, Trump is currently considering three possible courses of action:
launch new strikes;
to continue the economic stranglehold on the Iranian regime;
to strike a deal that would include significant concessions to the Iranians.
Rapid De-escalation
While Trump was weighing his next steps, intense diplomatic activity took place on Thursday, including numerous phone calls between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and regional mediators from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, Oman, and Egypt.
Mediators from Qatar continued discussions with the Iranians and the White House on a draft proposal outlining a series of steps to be taken by the parties within two days to build mutual trust with a view to reaching a broader agreement.
The proposal includes the following:
On the very first day, the U.S. will lift the naval blockade and unfreeze a portion of Iran’s frozen assets. In return, Iran will send an official invitation to the IAEA to send inspectors to the bombed nuclear facilities;
On the second day, the Strait of Hormuz would have to reopen, after which nuclear negotiations would resume, focusing on Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.
Putin is ready to step in as a mediator
Axios notes that on November 5, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei —a key participant in indirect negotiations with the U.S.—met with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
The meeting took place a few days after a phone call between Putin and Rezaei, as well as the Russian dictator’s offers to act as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran.
Rezaei reported that he had delivered a message to Putin from Iran’s Supreme Leader Mohtaba Khamenei. He added that Putin emphasized his willingness to try to help bring an end to the war.
“We informed Mr. Putin that we had presented the Americans with seven conditions regarding diplomacy, and that until the Americans fulfill our seven conditions, neither will the Strait of Hormuz be opened nor will there be any negotiations,” Rezaei said after the meeting.
U.S. Preparations for Strikes
Meanwhile, a U.S. official says that U.S. Central Command is finalizing preparations for a possible resumption of major combat operations in Iran, although no new orders have yet been received from Washington.
One sign that the U.S. is planning to resume strikes could be the arrival of a third U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike group in the Middle East.
According to an American official, the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group will spend several days in Singapore, beginning with a port call on Friday. The source says they will not reach U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility until mid-November.
