An Old Mercedes With The Spirit Of A Supercar: The Iconic AMG Hammer Returns

A German company has hinted at a modern take on the legendary car.
HWA, known for developing and building Mercedes-AMG race cars as well as the legendary CLK GTR Straßenversion, is preparing a major new project in the field of restomoding. The German firm has hinted at a modern interpretation of the iconic AMG Hammer—a car that, back in the 1980s, forever changed the perception of high-performance sedans.

The original Hammer debuted in the mid-1980s as the most advanced version of the W124-generation sedan. This was a time when AMG was still an independent company, not a division of Mercedes-Benz. The stock 3.0-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine was replaced with a 5.5-liter V8 producing 355 l.s. (torque: 526 Nm), allowing the rear-wheel-drive sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds. Later, an even more powerful 6.0-liter version (385 l.s.) was introduced, cementing the model’s status as a true icon from Affalterbach, writes CarScoops.

Aggressive styling and modern technology
So far, HWA has published only one teaser on social media. Although the engineers don’t explicitly call the new model the successor to the Hammer, the recognizable silhouette of the W124 speaks for itself.
The car features modern LED lighting, and if we draw a parallel with the company’s previous project—the revived 190E Evo II—we can expect flared wheel arches and a major overhaul of the suspension. HWA notes that the car will remain “true to its roots while pushing the boundaries of modern technology: the familiar concept takes on a completely new form.”
Exactly which engine will be under the hood remains a mystery for now. It’s quite possible that this restomod will be equipped with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 from the Evo II model, which produces 444 k.s. of power and 550 Nm of torque.
