The Pentagon chief issued a statement regarding his impeachment.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset dismissed the threat of impeachment, calling the initiative political gamesmanship. He stated that attempts to remove him from office have been unsuccessful, just like previous attempts to impeach President Donald Trump.
This was reported by The Hill.
According to the Pentagon chief, the campaign against him was initiated by disgruntled Republican Congressman Thomas Massie and his like-minded colleagues in the Democratic Party.
Hegset called their actions “political theater” and accused his opponents of trying to destroy political rivals instead of focusing on their own policies.
“A disgruntled, defeated congressman, together with his Democratic allies, has brought forward fictitious articles of impeachment against me, just as they tried to do twice with President Trump,” the minister stated.
He also added that his opponents are taking such steps because their own policies have failed to produce results.
“Their obsession with political agendas, disguised as governance, drives them to try to destroy their opponents. All of this is a policy of personal destruction,” Hegset said.
At the same time, the Pentagon chief expressed confidence that he faces no threat of impeachment.
“It didn’t work against President Trump, and it won’t work against me. You can be sure of that,” he emphasized.
Why Hegset Faces Impeachment
The impeachment proceedings were initiated by Republican Thomas Massie. He stated that he plans to reintroduce the relevant resolution in the House of Representatives once members of Congress return to work next week.
Massie had already attempted to launch this process in September. At that time, he presented eight articles of impeachment accusing Hegset, in particular, of violating the Constitution and federal law.
Among the allegations were conducting military operations without congressional authorization, illegal strikes against vessels suspected of involvement in drug trafficking, and violations of the rules of war.
However, the House of Representatives did not vote on the resolution at that time: Speaker Mike Johnson adjourned the plenary session early before a recess in the proceedings.
The issue of impeachment resurfaced after the U.S. midterm elections, in which Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress. The new Congress will begin its work in January.
Donald Trump himself had previously stated that he intended to keep Hegset as Secretary of Defense, despite calls for his dismissal.
However, media outlets, citing their sources, reported that Trump had called his advisers to discuss whether Hegset should step down.
