U.S. citizens reject key aspects of Trump's foreign policy.

The foreign policy of U.S. President Donald Trump does not enjoy broad support among Americans, experts, or political leaders—including many Republicans. Most respondents oppose his tariff policy, support strengthening NATO, and advocate for additional aid to Ukraine. These results could complicate the Republicans’ position ahead of the midterm congressional elections, writes Foreign Policy.

According to the poll, 81% of Americans believe that Trump’s tariffs do not improve their standard of living, and 63% believe they hinder job creation. Even among Republicans, 62% acknowledge that tariffs increase household expenses.
Trump’s efforts to weaken U.S. commitments to its allies also lack support. Only 15% of those surveyed favor reducing U.S. participation in NATO. If Russia were to attack a NATO ally, such as Poland, 60% of Americans would support the use of military force.

The majority also disagrees with the White House’s approach to the war in Ukraine. Nearly 60% of Americans support additional military aid to Kyiv, while 70% support tightening sanctions against Russia. Among foreign policy leaders, 84% of those surveyed expressed support for continued military aid to Ukraine.

A war with Iran also proved unpopular: only one-third of Americans consider the decision to start it to be correct, while 68% believe the conflict was not worth the cost.

Finally, only 20% of respondents believe that the U.S.’s international standing has grown over the past ten years. Trump’s foreign policy agenda may not outlive his presidency.
