The frontal assault on Slavyansk and Kramatorsk has been thwarted.

The defeat of the occupiers during Operation “Vivaldi” thwarted the Russian generals’ plans to launch a head-on assault on Slavyansk and Kramatorsk. This was reported by the commander of the “Center” military group Andriy Biletsky at a press conference of the commanders of the 3rd Army Corps.

According to the brigadier general, enemy forces planned to capture these cities. To this end, three armies had amassed forces on the banks of the Black Zherebets River, intending to advance on Svyatogorsk and Rubtsy. A strike on both targets would have forced the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the eastern bank of the Oskol River to split their forces into two parts, and the occupiers intended to destroy them and advance on Barvinkove (Kharkiv Oblast).

Thus, first, the enemy sought to encircle the Slavyansk-Kramatorsk metropolitan area from the north, bypassing Lyman. Second, the remainder of the Russian forces were to attack the Ukrainian Armed Forces through Dobropillya, then continue their advance toward Barvinkove and encircle the Donetsk region. Biletsky emphasized that the capture of the Donetsk region was a top priority for Russia, not only militarily but also politically.

As is well known, the enemy formed the “Svyatogorsk salient” (a troop grouping) in September, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces responded swiftly: they counterattacked from the Lyman direction, cut off supply lines, and by October 14 had completely eliminated the new threat.

“Currently, the 144th Division of the Russian Federation’s 20th Army has effectively been defeated and has ceased to exist. These (maneuvers by the surviving enemy units) on their part now look more like death throes than organized, systematic military operations,” the commander added.

The brigadier general made it clear that the defeat of the first group of troops—that is, the Russian Federation Army’s “Svyatogorsk salient”—makes a renewed offensive and a frontal assault on Slavyansk or Kramatorsk unlikely in the coming months. Putin’s generals have one remaining option—a strike through Dobropillya.

“The enemy has not yet abandoned this strategy,” warned Andriy Biletsky.
