Famous Ukrainian poet Dmytro Pavlychko passed away at the age of 94.

The head of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine Mykhailo Sidorzhevsky announced it.

“Dmytro Pavlychko died this evening. Bogdan Goryn just informed me about this with reference to the writer's daughter," Mr Sidorzhevsky wrote.

What is Dmytro Pavlychko known for?

Dmytro Pavlychko is a poet, literary critic and publicist. He was born on 28 September 1929. In 2004 he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

He was awarded: the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise IV, 4th class (1999, 2009), the Order of Merit (Ukraine), 3rd class (1997), the Order of Liberty (2015), the Shevchenko National Prize (1977).

In 1945-46 he was serving a sentence on charges of belonging to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. Later he was one of the organizers of the People's Movement of Ukraine, as well as one of the authors of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Ukraine.

In 1990-1994, 1998-1999, and also in 2005-2006 he was a People's Deputy (MP).

In 1995-1998 he was the Ambassador of Ukraine to Slovakia, and in 1999-2002, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland.
