A High-ranking Police Chief Fell Out Of A Window In Yekaterinburg

In Yekaterinburg, the former deputy head of the Center for Countering Extremism at the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Sverdlovsk Region of the Russian Federation, Police Colonel Sergey Shalaginov, was found dead, according to The Insider reports.

The pro-government portal URA.Ru reported that he had taken his own life after being dismissed from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and that he had recently been at odds with his superiors. The article was later removed from the publication’s website.

Shalaginov’s body was discovered on the morning of September 1 near a high-rise apartment building on Shchorsa Street, E1 reported. Sources at that publication claimed that he had retired shortly before his death.

The Sverdlovsk Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed Shalaginov’s death but denied reports of a workplace conflict. The head of the press service for the regional headquarters Valery Gorekhy told TASS that before his death, Shalaginov had submitted a request for retirement due to length of service, and that, on the contrary, he had been offered a promotion before leaving.

“Sergey Shalaginov, former deputy head of the Center for Countering Extremism at the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Sverdlovsk Region, died in Yekaterinburg; he had previously submitted a request for retirement due to length of service. Before retiring, he was offered a promotion by the leadership of the regional police headquarters. The regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs is currently assisting the family of our comrade-in-arms in organizing the funeral. As for the alleged conflict at work, which was reported by certain Telegram channels that failed to verify the accuracy of the information with the relevant authorities, this is nothing more than speculation.”

Shalaginov held the rank of police colonel. In 2022, he was awarded the Ministry of Internal Affairs medal “For Combat Solidarity.” In 2025, he gave a lecture to students at the Ural State University of Economics titled “Current Terrorist and Extremist Threats Among Young People,” in which he spoke, among other things, about liability for “unlawful acts” and rules of conduct on the internet.
