Traffic jams remain one of the most unpleasant things that can happen during a trip. However, there is a car that isn’t bothered by this problem, writes Supercar Blondie.
Instead of waiting for the cars ahead to pass through the traffic jam, you can simply “step over” them. To this end, the Hum Rider SUV, based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, was created in 2017.
The vehicle features a hydraulic suspension system that lifts it to a height of nearly 2.7 meters while simultaneously extending its wheelbase. Interestingly, the Hum Rider was created in 2017 as a promotional stunt vehicle for Verizon’s Hum connected car service.
At the push of a button, hydraulic arms extend from beneath the Jeep Grand Cherokee, spreading the wheels apart and lifting the body high into the air. This allows it to drive around many cars stuck in traffic.
In its normal state, the Hum Rider reduces the wheelbase and ground clearance. This system consists of more than 90 meters of hydraulic lines, and a Honda gasoline-powered generator provides the energy needed to operate the hydraulic pumps.
These modifications have also increased the SUV’s weight to approximately 3,850 kg, which is more than twice the weight of a standard Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle is equipped with heavy-duty tires to withstand the additional weight and unusual loads created by the hydraulic system.
In addition, a problem arose after the modifications: the driver cannot simply look out the window to see what is happening below. However, to solve this problem, the vehicle was equipped with four cameras mounted underneath it. These cameras transmit images to screens inside the cabin, allowing the driver to monitor what is happening around the vehicle.
However, the Hum Rider was not designed as a production vehicle. Only a single unit was ever built.
