What Happens When A Famous Designer Takes On A Cheap Fiat

Famous designers have transformed a cheap Fiat into an unusual electric car.

The affordable Fiat Topolino electric car unexpectedly became the basis for two striking design projects. At the Salone Auto Torino auto show in Italy , Fabrizio Giugiaro and entrepreneur Lapo Elkann unveiled two unique versions of the miniature electric car, named the Top L and Top J, reports Autoblog.

The Topolino is designed primarily for short trips. The model starts at $13,995, and the standard version has a top speed of just 30 km/h. After installing a special kit, the speed can be increased to 40 km/h, which allows it to be driven on some public roads. In essence, it’s more of an electric equivalent of a golf cart than a conventional car.

However, the designers decided to change the car’s character. The Top L features an open-top body and a two-seater interior. The creators were inspired by James Dean’s Porsche 550, known by the nickname “Little Bastard.” The car is painted in a matte aquamarine color, and the interior is trimmed in leather and Alcantara.

The Top J, on the other hand, was made more practical. It features four seats arranged back-to-back, and its blue-green color scheme pays homage to the 1950s Ferrari 166 MM that belonged to Elkanna’s grandfather Gianni Agnelli.

“Even affordable cars are capable of evoking emotions,” the project’s creators write.
