Germany's Ruling Party Has Formed A Team To Counter The Far-right "AdG"

The election campaign is picking up steam.

Germany's ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has assembled a broad team of experts to advise it during the state parliamentary election campaign in order to counter the far-right "Alternative for Germany" ("AfD").

On September 20, voters in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are set to elect a new state government, and according to the latest poll, “Alternative for Germany” is significantly ahead of the rest with 36%, followed by the Social Democrats with 29%.

As the election campaign gains momentum, the CDU—whose poll numbers stand at just 9%—unveiled its new team of advisors on Tuesday.

The team includes a school principal, a startup founder, as well as farmers and a nationally known police union leader, said the CDU’s lead candidate Daniel Peters.

He emphasized that the goal is to identify the main issues facing voters and focus on the “right solutions” during the campaign.

The “AdG,” which came in second in last year’s general election—the best result for a far-right party since World War II—continues to gain support ahead of several state elections scheduled for September.

In the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, the party has a good chance of winning an absolute majority on September 6, which would allow it to lead the state government for the first time.

In the city-state of Berlin, as well as in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, voting is scheduled for September 20, and according to poll projections, the AfD is also expected to perform well there.
