The Ukrainian Armed Forces Have Begun Striking New Targets On Russian Territory

The Ukrainian Armed Forces appear to have struck a food warehouse for the first time following attacks on oil refineries and the Wildberries and Ozon logistics hubs.

On Tuesday, August 4, drones attacked the distribution center of “Lenta”—one of the country’s largest supermarket chains, which has more than 7,000 stores and is controlled by billionaire Alexey Mordashov—for the first time.

Russian propaganda channels report that the drone crashed on the grounds of Lenta’s distribution hub in the Leningrad Region around 5:00 a.m. The strike caused a massive fire that took about four hours to extinguish; one of the company’s employees suffered burns.

The company later announced that this distribution center is temporarily suspending the receipt of goods from suppliers.

Top executives at Lenta, as well as at X5 Group—which operates a chain of 30,000 Pyaterochka and Perekrestok supermarkets—have appealed to the government.

Sources told the publication at the time that retail chains are trying to restructure their logistics to reduce the risk of supply disruptions. In particular, they are seeking to store more goods at suppliers’ facilities, picking them up only when there is an immediate need, and they also intend to rely on a broad, distributed network of small warehouses instead of giant hubs, the loss of which could paralyze supply chains.

A shift toward in-store delivery by suppliers is guaranteed to lead to higher costs and increased retail prices, warns analyst Mikhail Burmistrov. However, as the publication notes, Russian air defense systems are unable to protect territories from the hundreds of drones launched daily by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

It should be noted that on the afternoon of August 3, Russian forces attacked Dnipro, resulting in a fire breaking out at food warehouses.
