In Belarus, The List Of Areas With Radioactive Contamination Has Been Reduced By Nearly 200 Settlements

A year ago, Lukashenko demanded this.

The government has updated the list of settlements and facilities located in areas of radioactive contamination. The list has been shortened by 177 locations. This was reported by the government’s press service.

The resolution containing the updated list was signed on August 3 by Prime Minister Alexander Turchin.

“An analysis of the results of work conducted in 2021–2025 by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Health to survey contaminated areas, including soil sampling and assessment of radiation exposure doses to the population, showed a significant improvement in the situation in certain settlements located in areas contaminated with radionuclides,” the government reported.

Since 2021, the list has included 2,022 settlements, home to 930,600 people, and 49 facilities.

Now, the list includes 1,845 settlements (-177), with a population of 364,200 (-566,400), and 33 facilities (-16).

“Among those excluded from the current list are Gomel, Luninets, the urban-type settlement of Lelchitsy, and the city of Ivye,” the government noted.

The resolution will take effect on January 1, 2027. Free meal benefits will remain in effect until June 2027 for minors residing in and/or attending educational institutions located in areas that have been removed from the contaminated category.

As a reminder, in April 2025, while hearing a report from officials on the development of districts in the Gomel Region affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Alexander Lukashenko was outraged by the data on the number of settlements listed as contaminated.
“What have we been doing for the past 30 years, if 900,000 people are living in contaminated territories?” — Lukashenko said.

He instructed officials to “seriously analyze the criteria for classifying territories as affected or contaminated and determine how appropriate this is under current conditions, taking into account all measures that have been taken.”
