ISW: Russian Generals Are Lying To Putin

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are carrying out successful attacks in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions.

The Russian military command is lying to the Kremlin about the extent of its successes in northern Ukraine, claiming that Russian troops are actively advancing across the entire theater of operations, including a section of the front line that has remained virtually unchanged for nearly two years. This is according to a report by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

On July 29, Russian forces announced the capture of Nova Sech, and on July 30, they announced the capture of Malaya Slobodka and Mogritsa in the Sumy region, as well as Virivka in the Kharkiv region.

At the same time, the ISW notes that the Russian Federation’s armed forces have been claiming to have captured a new settlement in these two regions almost every day, starting at least as early as July 22.

“The ISW has not observed any signs that Russian forces have carried out the necessary number of redeployments, concentrated equipment, or intensified offensive operations commensurate with the size of the territory they claim to have captured in recent days,” the report states.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces also refuted Russia’s claims that Russian troops had captured Malaya Slobodka, Mogritsa, and Novaya Sech.

It is noted that Russian infantry continues to carry out infiltration missions in the north, while Ukrainian servicemen continue to film videos and use AI to alter or create footage of Russian soldiers holding flags in populated areas where Russian troops may have infiltrated solely to falsely claim the capture of these flags.

Analysts point out that the Kremlin is using these claims of success to convince the United States and other Western nations that Russia’s war is going so well that the West should withdraw its support.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are launching attacks in some areas of northern Ukraine, which contradicts the Russian narrative of troops advancing across the entire theater of operations without encountering resistance.

For example, Ukrainian defense forces liberated Odradne in the Kharkiv region, as confirmed by an ISW assessment. In addition, Ukrainian forces launched counteroffensives near Nova Secha, Mogritsa, Ivolzhanske, and Pisarevka, slowing Russia’s advance in these areas.
