Director Andrei Kudinhenko Has Left Belarus

The KGB and OMON came to his place to conduct searches.

The KGB and OMON raided the home of director Andrei Kudinienko. He was forced to flee Belarus. This was reported by Kudinienko’s friend, Janusz Gavrilyuk, director of the Bulbamovie Belarusian Film Festival.

According to Gavrilyuk, the Belarusian authorities accused Kudinienko of “extremism.” Eight OMON officers and two KGB agents participated in the searches of his apartment and the film school. The searches lasted 15 hours. Kudinhenko’s passport and phone were confiscated. All of Andrei’s messaging apps and social media accounts are now under KGB control. The director was told that he faces 8 to 12 years in prison.

Andrei Kudinchenko is known for his feature films *Occupation. Mysteries” (2004)—which, despite international acclaim, was banned for several years by the Ministry of Culture—and “Massacre” (2010). The first film depicts life in Nazi-occupied Western Belarus. The second is based on Prosper Mérimée’s novella about the werebear “Lokis.” In the second half of the 2000s, he worked in Russia, including as part of Pavel Lungin’s team.
