The dictator had become a frail and sickly old man.
For a long time, Alexander Lukashenko’s health has been virtually a mystery to the Belarusian public, apart from the occasional news item in the media. The dictator has been appearing in public less and less, having switched to a three-day workweek.
Many sources claim that Lukashenko suffers from a whole host of illnesses, which are becoming increasingly apparent as he ages. The website Charter97.org has compiled information about the dictator’s health.
Diabetes
Lukashenko has long been rumored to have this condition. Rumor has it that the ruler has an advanced form of the disease. Some have pointed to his swollen legs, claiming that in one of his family photos, the dictator has sores on his shins, and that a toe on his right foot has even been amputated. Some speculated at the time that Lukashenko has type 3 diabetes with late-stage complications.
Prostate cancer
The publication EUobserver reported on Lukashenko’s prostate cancer. “In February 2010, Alexander Lukashenko was in Switzerland, where he underwent prostate surgery, a high-ranking European Union diplomat told EUobserver.com,” the publication wrote.
Political analyst Dmitry Bolkunets once stated that Lukashenko is forming a commission tasked with organizing his own funeral, which has already been scheduled down to the minute. Minsk has thus decided to follow the example of the late Soviet Union, where general secretaries decided “where to bury the leader,” while Lukashenko himself has been treating his prostate condition for fifteen years, having undergone surgery in Europe back in 2010.
Stroke
Russian political analyst Valery Solovey, citing sources, stated that doctors once managed to save Lukashenko after a stroke. Doctors saved the life of the leader, who had already suffered a series of mini-strokes that had impaired the dictator’s facial expressions. Prior to this, Solovey had claimed that Lukashenko had been saved by Chinese doctors, and that the dictator had clearly suffered more strokes.
Psychopathy
During a medical examination for his appointment as chairman of a collective farm, Lukashenko was diagnosed with “mosaic psychopathy,” and in 1978, the head of the Mogilev Regional Food Trade Administration—where the future ruler had worked as a secretary of the Komsomol—sent him for another medical examination “due to inappropriate behavior.” With this diagnosis, Lukashenko was discharged from the army.
Joint Problems
In late summer 2021, footage of a Lukashenko press conference appeared online, where many people noticed the usurper’s gait—several media outlets deemed it rather strange.
The video also repeatedly showed the dictator barely dragging his feet as he descended the airplane stairs.
At the May 9, 2023, parade in Moscow, Lukashenko was unable to walk to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on his own. He was driven there by car.
In 2024, the situation repeated itself.
Head tremor
Lukashenko’s head is shaking more and more frequently. A doctor at one of Minsk’s hospitals, who wished to remain anonymous, told Charter97.org in a comment that the dictator may be suffering from essential tremor.
“Lukashenko has begun showing signs of tremor.” This means he has problems not only with his head but also with his nervous system. Tremor refers to involuntary movements that suddenly occur in a single muscle or group of muscles due to a misdirected signal from the brain. There are many factors that can cause head tremors. For example, they can be caused by organic and functional changes in the nervous system in the cerebral cortex associated with multiple sclerosis or brain tumors. But most often, this symptom occurs as a result of nervous tension, severe stress, or alcohol abuse.
According to the doctor, old age spares no one, and illnesses at this age begin to surface.
“Head tremors can occur even after age 40. It’s obvious that the dictator is under severe nervous tension. Perhaps in the coming years we’ll see ‘Swan Lake,’” the doctor noted.
