A tanker belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet—which is subject to sanctions for transporting Russian oil—likely spilled oil off the coast of Oman.

This was reported by Reuters reports, citing satellite images analyzed by experts.

According to ship-tracking data, the tanker Caroline Bezengi loaded Russian oil in Novorossiysk prior to its most recent voyage. It last transmitted a signal via the AIS system on June 11 off the coast of Yemen, after which it disappeared from public monitoring services, the agency noted.

Satellite images from Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2, taken between July 2 and 13, a silvery-gray patch was detected near Al-Qibliya Island, which, according to three independent experts, appears to be an oil spill. Reuters also reviewed video footage showing a tanker in the area but was unable to independently verify the date the footage was taken.

The cause of the probable spill remains unknown, the agency emphasized. According to two sources in the maritime security sector, as early as June 8, the crew reported problems with the tanker near the Yemeni port of Mukalla. One of the sources also confirmed the spill.
