He was one of Putin's leading critics.

U.S. Republican Senator and friend of Ukraine Lindsey Graham passed away on the evening of July 11, his office announced.

A statement released by the senator’s office on X said he died after a “short and sudden illness.” He was 71 years old.

“Senator Graham’s family is grateful for the prayers during this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.

On July 10, Lindsey Graham was visiting Ukraine and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He assured Ukraine of continued support from Congress, according to New Voice.

The senator announced that he and his colleagues had reached an agreement with the White House regarding a new version of the bill on sanctions against Russia, which he co-authored. According to him, the adoption of the sanctions package would provide the U.S. with additional tools to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly in the area of ballistic missile defense.

Lindsey Graham also visited the production facilities of the Ukrainian defense technology company SkyFall.

Graham has been called one of Moscow’s fiercest opponents in American politics. On the eighth day of the full-scale war, Senator Lindsey Graham stated on Fox News: “I hope someone in Russia realizes that he [Vladimir Putin] is destroying the country, and you need to get rid of this guy by any means necessary.”

When Trump promised to impose 100% tariffs on Moscow and its trading partners if a peace agreement on Ukraine was not reached within 50 days, Graham immediately voiced his support—both for that rhetoric and for Trump himself.

“Putin, your time is coming; Donald Trump <…> is going to kick your ass good,” Graham said, adding that if he were in Putin’s shoes, he “would get to the negotiating table as soon as possible.”
