Estonia Wants To Cut Off Russia's Supply Of Raw Materials For Aluminum

The Russian defense industry relies on alumina.

Estonia has proposed that the European Union impose a ban on the export of alumina—a raw material used in aluminum production—to Russia.

This was reported in X wrote Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

He noted that the Russian defense industry depends on aluminum, and aluminum depends on alumina.

“Estonia has proposed that the EU impose a ban on the export of alumina to Russia. If we truly intend to raise the cost of aggression, we must close this loophole,” Tsakhn wrote.

He also noted that energy exports remain the primary source of funding for the Russian military machine.

“The most effective measure to cut off this cash flow is to impose a complete ban on the provision of maritime services for Russian energy exports. Although there is not yet a consensus on this issue among the G7 countries, this must remain a strategic goal of the European Union,” the Estonian minister noted.
