One Of The First Modern Megamalls Closed In Moscow After A UAV Attack

There is no information on when work will resume.

The Mega Khimki shopping and entertainment center in the Moscow Region has closed after a large-scale attack by Ukrainian drones on the Russian capital. An official announcement about this appeared on the complex's website the day before, on May 17. It noted that the center suspended work "for technical reasons". On the morning of May 18, a hotline operator at the mall noted that "there is no information about the time of resumption of work," writes The Moscow Times.

On the night of May 17, Ukrainian drones launched the largest strike on Moscow and the region in the entire war. In total, more than 120 drones attacked the capital. The debris of one of the downed drones fell on the roof of "Mega Khimki". Judging by the video of eyewitnesses, this led to a fire. Also in the city were damaged private and apartment buildings. A woman died, another person was injured. The shopping mall "Mega Khimki" opened in 2004. It is one of the first and largest megamalls in the country, which before the war in Ukraine belonged to the Swedish group Ingka, which manages the network of IKEA stores around the world.

In the fall of 2023, Gazprombank became the new owner of the entire Russian chain of shopping centers "Mega". The credit institution bought about 2.3 million square meters of commercial real estate. Officially the amount of the transaction was not disclosed. Experts estimated it at about $2.85 billion (about 300 billion rubles).

Russian state media did not cover the Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow in detail. As "The Agency" pointed out, on Channel One, Russia-1 and NTV, the anchors spent about a minute on the topic. Instead of a detailed account of the consequences of the attack, the focus of the broadcast shifted to the "response actions" of the Russian army. For example, Channel One reported that Russia was "smashing military facilities in Ukraine's rear areas".
