In Brazil, Authorities Have Allowed The Dilution Of Gasoline

There's a technical reason for that.

Because of the Strait of Hormuz crisis and frantic increases in fuel prices, Brazil has allowed more ethanol (alcohol) to be added to gasoline. But this won't come as a surprise to some local transportation, as since the 1970s the country has been producing engines that can run on alcohol at all.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

Brazil's Ministry of Mines and Energy approved a 2% increase in the percentage of ethanol, while previously the figure was kept at 30%. At the same time, Brazil has huge biofuel reserves and its low cost allows to restrain price tags at local gas stations.

The final decision should be confirmed by the CNPE energy council. However, experts are confident that it will support the proposal of the specialized ministry, the agency informs.

Brazil has a unique experience in developing engines that run exclusively on alcohol. They have been producing them here since the 1970s and now the country is preparing for the next step: to reach 35% biofuel content in the near future. Technical tests are now underway to ensure that such a compound will not harm modern cars.

Energy sovereignty and a "blow" to imports

The new energy strategy has concrete figures and the authorities are counting on huge resource savings thanks to even this 2% ethanol. The authority said in a statement:

"This measure has the potential to reduce the need to import gasoline by about 500 million liters per month. With this measure, Brazil is strengthening its energy sovereignty and moving toward self-sufficiency in gasoline,

by eliminating fuel imports."

Lula de Silva, the country's president, has elections coming up and is looking to strengthen his position precisely by fighting the oil crisis.
