Lukashenko: I Have No Friends

In the dictator's "hometown," people were moved to make candid confessions.

During a meeting with residents of the agricultural town of Govyady while on a working trip to the Shklov District of the Mogilev Region, Lukashenko admitted that he has no friends, according to his press service.

“There are people I know who have done a lot for me. I remember that. Maybe some president has friends. I’m talking about myself. You know, over time, friends start to demand a lot from you. They’re supposed to be friends and all that… But then you have to do something for them at the expense of others. And that leads to corruption. You know—that’s unacceptable to me. That’s why I probably don’t have any friends. There are good people with whom I can socialize, talk, and so on,” said Lukashenko.

Speaking about what true friends should be like, the dictator suggested that close relatives are better suited for this role. He cited his sons as an example, emphasizing that they “have never betrayed him.”

“It’s hard to even say what kind of people they should be. Well, maybe sons who will never betray you and who will do exactly as you demand and as you say… It’s the same everywhere: once you come to power, that means your friends, relatives, and family—everyone has to be rich… I grew up, just like all of you, in this poverty. Not far from here at all,” he concluded.
