Lithuania has received new intelligence regarding possible provocations by Russia.

Russia’s provocations against Europe are testing the West’s readiness to respond and are approaching the limit of what NATO’s Article 5 can withstand.

This was stated by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, according to Onet.

According to Nausėda, Lithuania has received intelligence information regarding possible provocations by Russia. Consequently, the country, like Poland, has significantly stepped up security measures along its border with the Kaliningrad Oblast.

The Lithuanian president emphasized that the recent incidents are part of a large-scale hybrid war against Europe, involving illegal migration, balloons, and drone incursions.

“The Russians want to test whether we will react or not. Putin is getting closer and closer to testing Article 5—that is, NATO’s obligation to come to the aid of an ally under attack,” Nausėda noted.

He added that the line between hybrid operations and direct military action is becoming increasingly blurred and could lead to human casualties.

Gaps in Air Defense and Lithuania’s Plans

Nausėda recalled a recent incident in which an enemy drone crashed into a tree and exploded. Fortunately, no one was nearby at the time, but the incident revealed serious gaps in the air defense system.

In this regard, Vilnius is accelerating the procurement of necessary defense systems:

modern counter-drone capabilities;

reconnaissance and surveillance equipment.

According to Nausėda’s forecast, thanks to these measures, Lithuania will be significantly better prepared for such threats as early as the second half of 2027.
