Journalists described the Democrats' victory using a metaphor from the world of surfing.

In the new issue of The Economist, published on November 5, features U.S. President Donald Trump on the cover, wearing a wetsuit and drowning underwater. The authors of the article write that “Trump’s humiliation presents an opportunity for America”.

The article describes the situation in which Trump, the Republican Party, and its supporters found themselves following the midterm congressional elections. Journalists compare it to a “washing machine”—a term surfers use to describe a situation where a massive wave knocks a person off their board and pulls them underwater, leaving them disoriented. According to the publication, this wave is the largest since the Watergate scandal, which occurred more than 50 years ago and ended with the president’s resignation. Journalists are calling the preliminary election results a triumph not only for the Democratic Party but also for American democracy.

The authors believe that the election was a death knell for Trump, who, upon taking the party’s helm, “abandoned its values.” In their view, most “old guard” Republicans have either left their posts or traded their principles for political survival. At the same time, the journalists argue, voters have given the Republicans a second chance.

They also point out that the Democrats’ lead is not that large and “a lot could go wrong,” for example, if they ignore the corruption and incompetence they promised to fight during the election.

In predicting Trump’s actions, the publication suggests that he will “spend the remainder of his term in the White House, gilding golf balls,” focusing on pardoning friends and punishing enemies, as well as on foreign policy, where he retains significant power. In particular, the journalists believe he may launch new strikes against Iran, attempt to pressure Ukraine into an unfavorable deal with the aggressor nation Russia, or invade Cuba.
