Fico Arrived In Ukraine And Announced That He Would Provide Assistance
Robert Fico

Slovakia is changing its position.

Ukraine and Slovakia have agreed to expand cooperation in the fields of energy, transportation, education, and European integration. The agreements were reached following intergovernmental consultations in Lviv, where on November 5 arrived Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico for a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Serhiy Koretskyi. The head of the Ukrainian government provided details of the meeting.

The parties signed a Joint Declaration on Cooperation, which sets forth the agreements reached and projects currently in the planning stages. Koretsky called the document a roadmap for the further work of the government teams.

A separate set of agreements concerns energy and humanitarian aid. Slovakia has allocated an energy aid package worth 500,000 euros to Ukraine: by the end of November, 54 generators are scheduled to be delivered to help ensure power supply during outages. Another 300,000 euros will be allocated to the Coalition for the Provision of Asylum for Civil Protection, and 200,000 euros will go toward the purchase of medical equipment for Ukrainian hospitals.

The prime ministers also signed an intergovernmental agreement on the opening of two schools: a Ukrainian-English gymnasium in Slovakia and a Slovak-English gymnasium in Ukraine. Both are scheduled to open in the next school year.

Among the topics discussed was Ukraine’s European integration. The parties discussed the opening of the two remaining negotiation clusters in the country’s EU accession process, as well as the possibility of launching an EU macro-regional strategy for the Carpathian region. It is intended to serve as an additional format for cooperation among countries in the region on development issues and joint projects.

According to Koretsky, Ukraine and Slovakia intend to sign a Framework Agreement on Financial Cooperation under the European SAFE instrument. Under this agreement, projects to restore Ukraine’s energy sector with a total value of over 100 million euros are planned.

Kyiv attaches particular importance to Bratislava’s decision to become a full-fledged member of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children. This decision followed recent disagreements between Slovakia and other EU countries regarding international obligations related to the return of children illegally taken to Russia.
