Rubio is going to become a superhero.

U.S. President Donald Trump has come up with an unusual way to “solve the problem” of Cuba—to drop Secretary of State Marco Rubio onto the island by parachute so he can sort everything out in two minutes. However, behind the joke—which made Trump’s supporters laugh—lies a more serious context: Washington is taking an increasingly hard line against Havana and does not rule out radical measures against the island.

U.S. President Donald Trump joked that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio could be parachuted into Cuba to quickly resolve the situation on the island. This statement came amid Washington’s increasingly harsh rhetoric toward Havana and previous remarks by the U.S. administration about possible further actions against Cuba.

Trump made this statement on October 27 during a speech to Republican Party supporters in Lubbock, Texas. The full text of his speech was published by Roll Call.

So, at some point during his speech, Donald Trump invited Secretary of State Marco Rubio onto the stage, after which he spoke about the possibility of sending him to Cuba.

“Maybe once we’ve dealt with Iran, on the way back we’ll drop Marco off in Cuba. We’ll send him there by parachute. We’ll drop him right in the middle of Cuba, and he’ll solve that problem in two minutes,” Trump said.

The U.S. president also claimed that Cuba is allegedly moving in a direction favorable to Washington.

“Cuba is moving in our direction, just like everything else, because our country is respected again,” he said.

At the same time, Trump did not explain exactly what he meant by these words. He made his statement about landing in Cuba in a joking manner and did not announce any decision regarding an actual military operation in Cuba during this speech.

Why Trump Is Talking About Cuba Again

The U.S. president’s statement came amid increasing U.S. pressure on the Cuban government. Washington has recently hinted on several occasions at the possibility of significant changes in relations with Havana, and Trump has publicly spoken about the need to determine the future course of action regarding the island after the conclusion of the operation against Iran.

Specifically, on October 23, during a speech in Florida, the U.S. president stated that Washington would turn its attention to Cuba after Iran. At that time, he also mentioned the possibility of sending U.S. warships to the Cuban coast and enlisting Rubio to finalize the negotiations.

For his part, on October 26, Marco Rubio stated that Cuba needs “very radical changes.” He also called on those seeking change on the island to take advantage of the situation and establish confidential cooperation with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Is the U.S. Preparing a Military Operation

It should be noted that in September, CBS News reported that the U.S. Army was considering deploying additional units to U.S. Southern Command, whose area of responsibility includes Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.

According to the network, an internal U.S. Army document called for an assessment of the readiness of military police, medical, engineering, and logistics units. Several U.S. officials told CBS News that this work was related to planning for possible actions against Cuba. At the same time, the document itself did not mention the island directly and did not contain orders to deploy troops. Nor did it specify the location or nature of a possible operation.

Earlier, in July, CBS News reported that U.S. military strategists were considering various scenarios for possible actions against Cuba, including an airborne assault involving thousands of troops. At that time, the network’s sources also emphasized that considering such scenarios did not mean the operation had been approved. Thus, Trump’s joke about paratrooping Rubio became yet another public statement amid Washington’s escalating rhetoric toward Cuba. At the same time, no specific decisions regarding sending the Secretary of State to the island or launching a military operation were announced during the speech in Texas.
