Psychologists Reveal The Secrets To Enjoyable Correspondence

These tips will help you better understand the person you're talking to.

To prevent misunderstandings and conflicts in written communication, it’s important not to demand immediate replies, not to assume what the other person is thinking, and to discuss complex topics over the phone or in person. A lack of response and short messages are often perceived more negatively than the situation warrants, writes Psychology Today.

Experts point out several common mistakes that turn an ordinary chat into a source of anxiety.

Don’t expect an instant response. Even if someone usually responds quickly, they aren’t obligated to be available every minute. A delay could be because they’re busy or because they need time to think about their reply.

Don’t read too much into messages. A short “OK” doesn’t necessarily mean irritation, and a lack of emotional reaction doesn’t mean indifference. Text messages lack tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language, so we often fill in the gaps with our own assumptions.

Consider the context. If someone responds differently than you expected, think about other possible explanations before jumping to conclusions about their feelings toward you.

“A lack of response or a delay isn’t necessarily a reason to jump to conclusions,” the expert reminds us.

Clarify rather than assume. If a message upset you or seemed unclear, it’s better to calmly ask what the other person meant. This helps prevent assumptions from turning into a conflict.

Discuss sensitive topics over the phone or in person. Texting is convenient for short questions, but emotional conversations are easier to have when you can hear the other person’s tone and clear up misunderstandings right away.

The main rule is not to assume you know someone’s intentions based solely on text.
