The Pope discussed humanitarian aid for the residents of Aleshki with the President of Ukraine.
Pope Leo XIV spoke by phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to the Vatican’s official news portal.
The pontiff described the situation in the city as dire. In his view, the parties to the conflict should work together to organize the delivery of food and medical aid, as well as to evacuate residents.
The Pope informed Zelenskyy of a recent phone conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. During that call, he called for a local ceasefire and offered to facilitate dialogue on the matter.
Oleshky is located on the left bank of the Dnieper River, less than 10 km from Kherson. Before the war began, the city had a population of over 20,000.
In the summer of 2023, the city was almost completely flooded after Russian occupiers destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.
