A Florida court has issued an arrest warrant for former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, according to NBC. He is 95 years old.

The decision to arrest Castro was made in connection with his possible involvement in the shooting down of two humanitarian planes in 1996.

Indictments have also been filed against five other individuals—Lorenzo Alberto Pérez-Pérez, Emilio José Palacio Blanco, José Fidel Gual Barzaga, Raúl Simanka Cárdenas, and Luis Raúl González-Pardo Rodríguez. These are the pilots who allegedly participated in the operation.

All six face numerous charges: four counts of murder, two counts of destroying aircraft, and conspiracy to murder U.S. citizens.

The incident involving the aircraft occurred on February 24, 1996. The Cuban Air Force shot down two civilian Cessna 337 aircraft belonging to the Miami-based Cuban émigré organization Brothers to the Rescue.

The organization was engaged in searching for Cuban refugees attempting to reach the U.S. by sea, but also carried out anti-government activities: in particular, it dropped leaflets over Cuba. As a result of the attack, four people on board the two planes were killed. The crew of the third plane managed to return to Florida.

According to U.S. authorities, the planes were shot down over international waters north of Cuba.

As a reminder, in January, the military captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and transported him to New York to stand trial.
