Russia's Most Powerful Supercomputer Came Under Attack By The Ukrainian Armed Forces

"Galushkin" was located in a data center in Vladimir that was attacked by drones.

Yandex likely lost its last supercomputer, “Galushkin”—the most powerful in Russia—overnight. It was located in a data center in Vladimir that was attacked by Ukrainian drones.

Dialog.UA looked into the details. Yandex confirmed that the site’s infrastructure was damaged and its operations have been completely halted. It is currently unknown whether “Galushkin” was damaged. However, the likelihood of this is high.

“Galushkin” is one of Russia’s most powerful supercomputers. It is built on AMD EPYC and NVIDIA A100 hardware. It has been located in Vladimir since 2021. It has a performance of over 16 petaflops. It is used primarily for machine learning and neural network training tasks, including YandexGPT models.
Yandex has a total of three supercomputers. The other two, “Chervonenkis” and “Lyapunov,” were located in Sasovo, Ryazan Oblast. This data center was the first to be attacked on October 8 and sustained serious damage.

The company has remained silent about the status of its supercomputers. As of today, Ukraine has taken out 3 of the 4 largest data centers belonging to the IT monopoly Yandex. Across Russia, as well as in other countries, disruptions in the company’s services have been reported.

Israeli journalist Sergey Outslander commented on the situation. He believes that “Yandex” will never recover.

“Yandex,” in a moment of overconfidence, marked the locations of its data centers on its maps, literally telling everyone where to find them—in case anyone didn’t already know. After all, they’re astonishingly inefficient at everything they touch. They’re like some kind of anti-Midas. They’ve torn down their third data center. I think by winter, Yandex will be just like Wildberries. Which sort of exists, but...” the journalist wrote.
