On whether an energy truce between Ukraine and Russia is possible.
Serhiy Nahorniak , a member of parliament from the “Servant of the People” party and a member of Ukraine’s parliamentary committee on energy , does not believe an energy truce with Russia is possible before winter. This is because Russian President Vladimir Putin expects to achieve his goals, despite misjudging the situation.
Nagornyak spoke about this in an interview with “Telegraf”.
According to the Ukrainian lawmaker, Putin is likely being briefed on the successes of the energy terror campaign against Ukraine, but at the same time is being assured that the Ukrainian military will not be able to inflict serious damage on Russia’s energy sector. Nagornyak believes that the Russian dictator’s inner circle is afraid to tell him the truth and may not even fully understand the situation in Ukraine themselves.
- I don’t believe in an energy truce! Putin is most likely being briefed on the potential successes of Ukraine’s energy terrorism. At the same time, they are misleading him into believing that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are incapable of causing significant, catastrophic consequences for Russia’s energy sector,” said Sergey Nagornyak.
Because of these reports, Putin, according to the lawmaker, continues to live under illusions and believe that he will be able to achieve his goals. Nagornyak himself expects that Russia will attempt to terrorize Ukraine again this coming winter.
The lawmaker called for a tit-for-tat response
Nagornyak expressed hope that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will have sufficient strength and resources to demonstrate that, in an energy standoff, both sides can take action. At the same time, he emphasized that this is not just about strikes on Russian oil refineries.
“Strikes on oil refineries do not directly allow residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg to experience the energy terror that Ukraine is enduring. “I think we need to mirror what they’re doing. So that residents of these Russian cities experience firsthand what Kyiv residents went through last winter,” the lawmaker said.
According to Nagornyak, residents of Russian cities should feel the consequences of the attacks Ukraine is facing. He believes this could influence public sentiment in Russian society.
“We must respond in kind. They must experience firsthand all the terror that is being inflicted upon us in Ukraine. And then, I think, public sentiment in Russia will begin to shift,” said Serhiy Nahorniak.
Russian officials must feel the consequences
The lawmaker specifically mentioned Moscow, where many officials live. According to him, having the heat shut off—even for just a few days in winter—would be an unpleasant experience for them.
“If they’re left without heat for two or three days in the winter, it will be very unpleasant for them. They need to feel all these consequences firsthand!” declared Nagornyak.
