The former president of the Republika Srpska Biljana Plavšić, who was convicted of war crimes, has died at the age of 96. Serbian television reported her death. The funeral is scheduled to take place in Banja Luka.

Biljana Plavšić was born on July 7, 1930, in Tuzla. Before entering politics, she worked in the natural sciences and served as head of the biology department at the University of Sarajevo. In 1996, six years after entering politics, Biljana Plavšić was elected president of the Republika Srpska. She held this position until 1998.

While holding leadership positions during the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995, Biljana Plavšić was indicted in 2000 by the Hague Tribunal on charges of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. A year later, she surrendered to the tribunal.

She was sentenced to 11 years in prison, but after serving only two-thirds of her sentence, Plavšić was released. She pleaded guilty to one of the charges. In exchange, all other charges were dropped. She later recanted her confession.

After her release from prison in 2009, Biljana Plavšić was no longer involved in political activities. She was 72 years old at the time. She spent her final years living in Belgrade.
