Oleksandr Kovalenko: ‘Russian ‘Aircraft Carrier’ In Black Sea Is Wrecking’
OLEKSANDR KOVALENKO

The military expert told how “interesting events” could begin in the Crimea.

On Saturday, April 29, a fire broke out in the occupied Ukrainian Sevastopol due to a drone hitting an oil depot. After this incident, Russian officers are trying to escape from the Crimea en masse.

What is happening on the occupied peninsula? The Charter97.org website spoke with the well-known Ukrainian military expert Oleksandr Kovalenko.

— First of all, I would like to note that the Ukrainian side has not officially recognized that our drones were in Sevastopol. On the other hand, yes, there really was an incident at the oil depot. The fire destroyed a fairly decent amount of fuel and lubricants.

It is important to understand why there was such a reaction, including from the Russian military. The fact is that the military is well aware that if an oil depot is on fire and a large amount of fuel and lubricants is lost, one or another bridgehead will not receive these fuels and lubricants. Consequently, the ability to conduct either offensive or defensive operations is reduced.

It all boils down to the fact that such an incident could affect the defense capability of the entire group of Russian occupation forces in the south. Not critical yet, but in the future they will be limited in their functionality.

In order not to fall, to put it mildly, under another distribution or not to be at the epicenter of very interesting events, many are trying to protect themselves and their families by leaving Crimea as soon as possible.

— What “very interesting events” do you mean?

— There has already been one incident at one oil depot. Perhaps this will happen at some other objects. They always have something going on there.

In addition, today the Crimean bridge is the only facility that provides the more or less, despite the damage, tolerable logistics between the occupied Crimea and the mainland of the Russian Federation. What if it stops working altogether?

The Russians are trying to take advantage of this window of opportunity to leave the Crimea comfortably enough. Someone who is, let's say, far-sighted, tries to do it while there is such an opportunity.

— Is it possible to say that the Ukrainian army strikes not only on the occupied peninsula, but also on Putin's image?

— Undoubtedly. Here we are not even talking so much about strikes on the Crimea. The very fact that the airspace of the peninsula was considered as safe as possible for the Russian invaders is important. With layered air defense, layered coastal anti-ship defense and other means. They really created a rather serious, impregnable bastion out of the temporarily occupied Crimea.

But in this bastion, both in 2022 and in 2023, seems to be constantly exploding due to some reason, there are “bangs”, smoke and so on.

— What does it mean?

— The fact is that although for all these years they tried to create such an unsinkable “aircraft carrier” in the Black Sea, they did not succeed. They cannot protect this “aircraft carrier” of theirs either from the air or from sea lines.

Gradually, the question arises, will they be able to protect it from land? This is all a complex blow to the reputation of the war criminal wanted by the International Criminal Court, Vladimir Putin.
