Two Strange Aspects Of Lukashenko's Visit To Moscow

Did the dictator ask to be invited to the Kremlin?

The Belarusian leader’s current visit to Russia appears unusual for several reasons, writes “Solidarnast”.

As a reminder, earlier this week, Prime Minister Alexander Turchin surprised everyone by deeming it necessary to fly to St. Petersburg to meet with “Gazprom” CEO Alexey Miller.

Then it was the Belarusian leader’s turn to surprise everyone. On the evening of August 27, he suddenly flew to Moscow on a “working visit.”

On Friday, August 28, Alexander Lukashenko held a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. This was their first official meeting outside of Minsk—previously, the Russian Prime Minister had traveled to meet with the Belarusian leader.

Official reports do not explain what prompted Lukashenko’s visit. Judging by the footage released, Lukashenko and Mishustin spoke without the participation of delegations.

A second strange detail surfaced in a statement by the Russian government aide Yuri Ushakov. He said that Lukashenko is in Moscow “these days” on an “unofficial visit” (the Belarusian president’s press service, it should be noted, had described it as a “working visit”).

“Tomorrow, Saturday, he is scheduled to hold talks with Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. After the talks, the leaders will meet in an informal setting,” Ushakov said.

For now, it appears that Lukashenko, for some undisclosed reason, has asked to be received by the Russian leadership.
