Ukrainian Cyber Experts Shot Down Putin's "best Fighter Jet" Using Russian Air Defense Systems

Unexpected details have emerged regarding the crash of the Su-57 near Moscow.

The crash of Russian Su-57 fighter jet, which Vladimir Putin called “the best in the world,” was the result of a successful cyber operation. This was reported by the InformNapalm project on July 23.

News of the plane’s crash near the village of Lutino, outside Moscow, during a training flight broke this afternoon. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that “a combat-training aircraft crashed while taking off.” According to the official account, the crash was caused by a technical malfunction. At the same time, Russian pro-military bloggers speculated that the plane was actually shot down by “friendly fire” from air defense systems.

The InformNapalm project reported that the downing of the plane was the result of a HUMINT+CYBINT operation—a combination of human intelligence and cyber intelligence—which “turned the Russian air defense system into a weapon against its own air force.”

On July 17, the project reported that experts had analyzed a new set of materials intercepted from the Russians. Among them were live streams from a training ground where “BARS Moscow” air defense crews were being trained to counter Ukrainian drones (one of the pro-Russian propagandists had hinted at this unit’s involvement in shooting down the aircraft). Based on this material, InformNapalm prepared an analytical report on personnel training, the software and hardware complex, combat algorithms, and identified vulnerabilities of the “BARS Moscow” system, and forwarded it to the Ukrainian defense forces.

“Russia developed ‘BARS Moscow’ to protect the Moscow region from Ukrainian long-range drones. As a result, one of its crews helped shoot down a Russian Su-57,” InformNapalm concluded.
