There could be a "counteroffensive" by the occupying forces.
A journalist from the “Pryamyy” asked the head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov to share his opinion on whether the war in Ukraine could end in Crimea, just as it began, to which the politician replied:
“I feel the same way as you do in this case, and I’m very afraid that we might jinx it, so that we won’t be disappointed later. I assume that those who have begun the systematic destruction of enemy air defense systems in Crimea, the destruction of logistics facilities, and, at the same time, successful strikes on power generation facilities in Crimea, know what they are doing, since this looks like a deeply thought-out plan. I’d like to think that the culmination of this plan will be the liberation of Crimea as the first step toward liberating other Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.”
The head of the Mejlis explained what needs to be done to get the Russians to leave Crimea on their own:
“In my previous interviews, I said that a ‘negative offensive’ by the Russians in Crimea could take place. I understand how difficult this is. To achieve this, we must cut off all fuel supplies and destroy the most powerful thermal power plants (the Tavricheskaya plant near Simferopol and the Balaklava plant near Sevastopol). They built these after the occupation, and all of Crimea’s electricity depends on these power plants. No fuel, no power—and it would seem like a walk in the park. The ferry has been destroyed. The Kerch Bridge is just biding its time, waiting to cut off all supplies.”
“But the liberation of Crimea alone—without additional security measures, guarantees, or fundamental changes to Russian territory—does not guarantee our security. I immediately dismiss the idea that even a single person among those who settled in Crimea after 2014 will remain there after the peninsula’s liberation. I can’t imagine that, regardless of why they came to Crimea. They’ll look for excuses, but they knew it was stolen land,” Chubarov emphasized.
