Today, the key issue for Russia is the lifting of sanctions.
Ukrainian political strategist Yuriy Podorozhny on the air “Channel 24” explained that Lukashenko traveled to Putin for new instructions.
“Lukashenko is the Gauleiter of Belarus—that is, a leader appointed by the Kremlin’s occupying authorities. He is not an elected president, and democratic countries do not recognize him. In this capacity, he travels to receive instructions and orders from the Kremlin, from Putin,” said the political strategist.
Commenting on the use of infrastructure in Belarus for the benefit of the Russian military, Podorozhny added:
“This equipment was operating on behalf of the Russian military. Such a decision could not have been made in Belarus,” he explained.
In his opinion, it is too early to say that the military issue surrounding Belarus is completely resolved.
“It’s not worth saying that the military issue regarding Belarus is closed,” the political strategist emphasized.
On Lukashenko’s role in relations with the West
Podorozhny believes that right now the Kremlin may use Lukashenko not so much for military escalation as for attempts to establish contacts with the West.
“I see greater potential for Lukashenko as a ‘useful idiot’ for the Kremlin in another area—namely, that he will try to improve relations with Washington through soft diplomacy,” he said.
According to the expert, sanctions policy remains the key issue for Moscow.
“We understand that the key issue for Russia today is the lifting of sanctions,” Podorozhny emphasized.
He also warned that even targeted easing of sanctions could set a dangerous precedent.
“If some relief is granted to one sector, such relief will certainly be extended to other sectors as well,” said the political strategist.
