Hopes for peace have waned.
Hopes for a peace deal between the United States and Iran faded Tuesday after President Donald Trump said the truce with Iran was "barely breathing" and that Iran's response to proposed terms of a peace deal did not satisfy Washington. "I would call their response the weakest after reading this nonsense they sent us. I didn't even finish reading it," said Trump to reporters.
Iran wants an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, where US ally Israel is fighting against the Tehran-backed Hezbollah group. Tehran has also stressed its right to the Strait of Hormuz, demanded compensation for war damage and an end to the U.S. naval blockade, among other conditions.
Trump said Iran's response threatens the status of the truce that began April 7.
The U.S. has proposed first ending hostilities and then opening talks on more contentious issues, including Iran's nuclear program.
