At least 16 regions of Russia still have active animal rabies outbreaks, according to "Izvestia". The situation is most complicated in the Tyumen Region. According to the local government, more than 40 cases of rabies were detected in the region in January-February. In the Novosibirsk region since the beginning of 2026, 71 cases of rabies have been registered, 49 of them quarantined. The Veterinary Department of the region noted that the main carriers remain foxes and pets. At least 18 more outbreaks are registered in the Orenburg region, where foxes are also the most frequent vectors.

Rabies cases have also been detected in the Tver region, Altai Krai, Omsk, Tambov, Kemerovo, Nizhny Novgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Ryazan regions, as well as in Bashkortostan. Quarantine zones are also in effect in the Moscow region and Yaroslavl region.

But in many subjects people continue to refuse voluntary vaccination after bites, although the disease is deadly. Therapist Irina Yartseva reminded that the virus is transmitted through saliva, and after the appearance of symptoms it is impossible to save a person. In the Kaluga region the share of refusals reaches 34%, in Buryatia - 20% of 1418 cases. For example, in Altai Krai 1020 people refused emergency rabies prophylaxis in 2024, in 2025 - 843 people. In Dagestan in 2025, the proportion of refusals amounted to 5.7%, another 3.1% of patients spontaneously interrupted the course. In Lipetsk region in 2026, the number of refusals increased - 120 people against 79 in the same period last year. Vaccination refusals are also recorded in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, Mordovia, Ivanovo Region, Mari El, North Ossetia, Khakassia, Jewish Autonomous District, Udmurtia, St. Petersburg, Perm Krai, and Magadan Region.
