Iranian kamikaze drone Shahed has hit a Bapco Energies refinery on Sitra Island, south of Bahrain's capital Manama. The kingdom's state oil company declared force majeure on all oil supplies, Bahrain's BNA news agency reported.
Video from the scene, verified by CNN, captured a huge column of black smoke over the Al Maamer industrial zone and open fire at the facility. According to Reuters, eyewitnesses from the island observed smoke surrounding the entire complex. Bahrain's Interior Ministry later said the fire was contained and there were no casualties.
Bahrain's Health Ministry said an accompanying drone attack on a residential area of Sitra injured 32 people, including children, four of whom are in critical condition.
Bapco Energies said in an official statement that "the group's operations are affected by the ongoing regional conflict in the Middle East and the recent attack on the refinery complex." Force Majeure is a legal mechanism that releases a company from contractual obligations to supply due to force majeure. At the same time, Bapco assured that domestic demand in Bahrain will be met by reserve capacity.
The attacked refinery is Bahrain's only oil refining complex, with a capacity of about 380,000 barrels per day. This is the second strike on the refinery since the start of the war - on March 5, an Iranian ballistic missile hit one of the refinery's units, but the fire was quickly extinguished and production continued, the report said.
