He would be a legitimate strike target.
Israel will consider any new Iranian leader who continues the course of his predecessors a legitimate target for a strike, the country's Defense Minister Israel Katz said. "Any leader appointed by the Iranian terrorist regime to continue to implement the plan to destroy Israel, to threaten the United States, the free world and countries in the region, and to oppress the Iranian people, will be an unconditional target for elimination. It doesn't matter what his name is or where he is hiding," Katz wrote in a X social media post.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military operation against Iran. The Israeli strike killed the Islamic republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as members of his family and at least 40 senior military and political officials. According to sources Deutsche Welle and opposition Iranian TV channel Iran International, the 56-year-old son of Khamenei Mojtaba has been appointed as the country's new supreme leader. Prior to that, three Iranian officials speaking to The New York Times (NYT) noted that Mojtaba Khamenei is the top candidate for the post, and his appointment could be officially announced on the morning of Wednesday, March 4. At the same time, they said, Tehran fears that Khamenei's son could become a new target for the United States and Israel immediately after being declared ayatollah.
Mojtaba is the second son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He studied theology under his father and other influential teachers before becoming a cleric. In addition, Mojtaba taught theology at the seminary in Qom. "Mojtaba is the wisest choice now because he is well versed in the management and coordination of power and military apparatuses," Tehran-based analyst Mehdi Rahmati told the NYT. A politician close to Khamenei's son, Abdolreza Davari, noted that Mojtaba could become "a figure in the style of Saudi leader Mohammed bin Salman." "He is extremely progressive," Davari emphasized.
At the moment, Iran is temporarily led by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and a member of the Constitutional Guardian Council.
