Reuters sources revealed the inside-out strike scenario.
Iranian Kurdish militias have been discussing with Washington in recent days whether and how to attack Iran's security forces in the west of the country. Three sources familiar with the situation told the Reuters news agency. They spoke on condition of anonymity "to discuss sensitive military plans freely," the journalists noted, 9tv.co.il.
Kurds are traditionally the most hostile segment of society to the ayatollah regime. A coalition of Kurdish groups is based on the Iran-Iraq border, in the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan. They are now undergoing preparations for a possible attack. The goal is to weaken the Iranian military. The task is to sow chaos inside the country, to create conditions for an uprising of opponents of the Islamic regime, while the U.S. and Israel are striking military and nuclear facilities.
The interlocutors of journalists clarified that the final decision on the operation and its timing has not yet been made. It is only known that the Kurds have requested US military support.
The sources also said that Iraqi Kurdistan leaders in Erbil and authorities in Baghdad have been in contact with the Trump administration in recent days - the sides discussed the possibility of CIA assistance in arms supplies.
The Axios portal wrote this week that President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation with two leaders of Iraqi Kurdistan. Reuters could not independently confirm the said information - the CIA, Pentagon and White House declined to comment. The government of the Kurdish autonomous region also did not respond to a request.
Reuters notes: "Any operation from inside Iraq would likely require significant U.S. military and intelligence support. Kurdish groups in Iraqi Kurdistan have long cooperated with the US. However, it is still unclear how successful Iranian Kurdish groups can be inside Iran - their fighters have different levels of combat experience."
