The Son Of The Liquidated Ali Khamenei Has Become Iran's New Supreme Leader
Mojtaba Khamenei

He was appointed by the council of ayatollahs.

The Council of Ayatollahs on March 3 elected Iran's new supreme leader. He became Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the liquidated Ali Khamenei.

It was reported by Iran International. The election of the new leader came under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The decision came after it was revealed that members of the 88-member Assembly of Experts (a council of ayatollahs) were not in the Qom building that Israel attacked earlier Tuesday. Iranian media wrote that they would soon announce the name of the new supreme leader.

Mojtaba is the second oldest child of Ali Khamenei, now 56 years old. He was considered the most influential son of Iran's ex-leader and his potential successor.

"Mojtaba Khamenei, the influential son of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is a low-key but influential cleric who is often considered a shadowy force in the Islamic Republic. He is seen as a potential successor and has considerable influence over Iran's security and political apparatus, backed by his close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," the media wrote about him.

What is known about Mojtaba Khamenei

Mojtaba was born in Mashhad in 1969 and is the second son of Ali Khamenei. He was educated at the Alavi School in Tehran, an institution where the children of high-ranking officials of the Islamic Republic traditionally attend. In 1999, he continued his studies at Qom to become a cleric.

Mojtaba Khamenei is married to Zahra Haddad-Adel, daughter of Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, an influential conservative figure. Ali Khamenei's son fought on the front lines during the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, which gave him the credibility he needed among IRGC veterans.

In the mid-2000s, Mojtaba's influence in the political sphere became more prominent, although this is rarely recognized in the media. He came into the spotlight after the controversial 2004 presidential election, when one of the leading candidates, Mehdi Karroubi, in an open letter to Ayatollah Khamenei, publicly accused Mojtaba of meddling behind the scenes in favor of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Since the 2010s, Mojtaba Khamenei has been considered one of the most influential figures in the Islamic Republic. Although he has not held official government positions, analysts have repeatedly labeled him as a potential successor to his father.

Mojtaba is a supporter of Iran's hardline conservative camp, like his father, and has publicly supported tough policies against regime opponents and external enemies, Reuters wrote. The US imposed sanctions against him in 2019.
