The United States is pushing for the resignation of President Miguel Diaz-Canel in talks with Cuba, The New York Times reported, citing four sources.
According to the publication, U.S. officials consider Diaz-Canel a hardliner and an opponent of needed economic reforms. In the talks, the U.S. is also demanding the departure of some elderly officials, but no conditions have been placed on the Castro family.
The main U.S. goal is for Cuba to open its economy to American companies.
Miguel Diaz-Canel, who is 65, has served as Cuba's president since 2018 while also leading the Communist Party. Two years remain until the end of his presidential term. Recall, earlier the US blocked oil supplies to Cuba.
